TEAM TEACUP walks on….Now in our 3rd year and savoring every step of the Philadelphia 3 Day For the Cure Experience. October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and The Talking Teacup is a proud sponsor of “TEAM TEACUP”. Our wonderful women walkers consists of Maria Hall, Patti Fitzpatrick, Edie Lewis and Kathy Heck along with our biker boys on Safety Crew, Steve Hall and Eric Heck. We joined over 2,500 walkers Oct 15th – 17th in the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3 day for the Cure 60 mile walk. Sunrise on Day 1 saw Team Teacup and all of our fellow walkers and crew gather at the Willow Grove Mall for the Opening ceremonies to kick off our 3-day journey. The air was electric with enthusiasm, adrenaline and excitement as we set off with fresh feet to walk 60 small miles for one big cause. The hills of Chestnut Hill and Manayunk took a toll on our toes but we were welcomed with thunderous applause at multiple cheering stations, while school children offered beautifully bright smiles behind handmade signs of encouragement. Experiencing this, my feet felt fine as my head reminded my heart that I walk so children will have the chance to live in a world free from Breast Cancer. Our first day concluded at the Philadelphia Convention Center where we setup 2000 pink tents, our Home for the next 2 nights. Although exhausted and sore, we were proud of completing Day 1 after 20 long miles supported by thousands of bright sunny smiles. Day 2 started early and a sunny windy day greeted us. A ribbon of walkers, pretty in pink, made its way down City Line Ave where the Tony towns of The Main Line, Bryn Mawr, Narbeth, Ardmore, Merion and Wynnewood awaited. Many find mid-day, day 2 to be the hardest part of the 3-Day. Sore muscles and blisters wrapped around the realization that over 30 miles remain can dampen and drain the spirit. It’s at this point, through the cheering, the signs on lawns and doors, a policeman directing traffic wearing pink beads, and Safety Crew keeping us safe and smiling, that my spirit, ignoring my aching body, takes flight. I am fortunate to spend time with a fellow walker and as we chat, her story about her battle with Breast Cancer reminds me of why we walk. Back at camp I settle into my little pink tent and my heart is happy. My feet, not so much, as my head calculates I’ve taken over 80,000 steps in the past two days...I fall asleep knowing that each one helps bring us one step closer to a cure. Day 3, A glorious day. Excitement, chatter and the faint smell of ben-gay fills the air. We depart, on sore feet and soaring spirits, for the final leg of our journey. This day finds us on the streets of Philadelphia. From Fairmount, Downtown, Old City and South Philly, The City of Brotherly Love showers it’s sisters with support – Philly Style! Early on we entered the Zoo, where the residents were awaken early to greet us. A mother and baby giraffe are a fitting favorite among the walkers. We pass Boat House Row, City Hall, Independence Hall. Stroll up Ethren’s Alley, South Street and Finally our Pink Parade makes its way down Broad Street to the Navy Yard…just as the Eagles Game was letting out! The blending of Pink and Green, Eagles Fans and Pink Warriors, is overwhelming. Yet that last mile down Broad street, on top of the previous 59 miles of wear on my feet, takes a toll. As I entered the Navy Yard, tired and sore, my blisters had blisters. There are hugs and hollers’, high fives and higher spirits and as we float into the pink frenzy of closing ceremony, Edie turned to me with tears in her eyes and says “Nothing hurts anymore.” Some folks ask, “why walk 60 miles”? I say, I walk for the cheering children I saw in Chestnut Hill, I walk for the survivors I’ve been graced to meet along the way, I walk for those battling Breast Cancer so more of us will not need to join that dreadful fight. I walk because I cannot stand still while others are laid to an early rest. Team Teacup is honored to have raised over $13,000.00 in 2010. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed and supported our fund raisers, donated to our team and cheered us on every single step of the way. We look forward to 2011 and our 4th journey. New teammates are welcome to join us by contacting Kathy at The Talking Teacup. While walking you walked with me and together our feet found flight… Eric Heck 2010 – Philly Bike Crew 2009 – Philly Bike / Mall Safety Crew 2008 – Philly Supporter For a re-cap of the 2009 Philly 3 day 60 mile walk please see: 2009 3-Day
